🚨 🚨!! What gets called ‘therapy disengagement’ is often a person responding in line with their values and past experiences. For many people, therapy has involved being pathologised, judged, controlled, misunderstood, coerced or harmed. Especially for neurodivergent people, disabled people, queer people, people of colour, and many AFAB people who have historically experienced systems of diagnosis and therapy as sites of silencing, power imbalance or abuse. When someone has experienced therapy trauma, disengaging can become a very valid act of resistance and self-protection. A neuroaffirming therapist does not begin from the assumption that the therapist is the unquestioned expert and the client should simply comply or ‘ respect’ that authority. Trust is not owed to our profession automatically. It has to be earned. If someone has been pathologised, misdiagnosed, punished for their communication style, or had their autonomy removed in therapeutic spaces ; why would they automatically experience therapy as trustworthy or safe? Rather than asking: ‘Why won’t this person engage?’ What if we asked: ‘What has happened to make this feel unsafe, exhausting, or harmful?’ #counselling #speechpathology #neuroaffirmingButton

Kenny is an Arrernte cultural and support worker and director of Spirit of the Gumtree. We work alongside Kenny when providing speech pathology and counselling supports across Mparntwe and surrounding communities. This work is shaped through relationship, culture, and community. Kenny’s leadership and guidance have made possible conversations and connections that wouldn’t have happened or been appropriate otherwise. We intentionally work with a small number of communities each year. In 2026, our focus is on Utju and Ntaria, allowing us to build relationships in a way that is respectful, consistent, and led by community. As non-Indigenous clinicians, we hold in mind that we are guests on these lands, and this continues to shape how we show up and practise. Grateful to be working alongside Kenny in ways that prioritise culturally safe, community-led care. #speechpathology #counselling #neuroaffirmingButton
